According to the World Health Organisation, the burden of mental and behavioral disorders in India is a significant concern, particularly for disadvantaged communities facing trauma in their daily lives. Every sixth Indian needs mental health help, yet the treatment gap ranges between 70% and 92% for different mental health disorders.
Jan Sahas, recognizing that the communities we work with, are deprived of adequate mental health care, has developed an in-house counseling unit to provide grassroots access to mental health services. In the past 18 months, over 1800 beneficiaries have received direct counseling services in 35 districts across five states, and 397 mental health workshops have been conducted to increase awareness. To further bridge this gap, Jan Sahas has opened its Certificate Course in Barefoot Counselling to other organizations, with the first cohort of 25 participants. The team also trains community volunteers, such as Mann Sathis, to foster community resilience and make mental health care accessible at the grassroots. Jan Sahas's ultimate goal is to ensure that all members of their community have access to mental health care and the necessary support to build resilience.
